By the time R.E.M. released "Lotus" as the second single from Up, they had long settled into a predictable pattern for their B-sides -- split up live tracks, instrumentals, and remixes between the two-part British singles, then recycle those tracks for different territories. Lotus follows that pattern to a tee. The first part of the two-part single contains the title track, plus the instrumental "Surfing the Ganges" and the "weird mix" of "Lotus." Perhaps completists have some use for this, but the instrumental is flat and the weird mix is pointless, and neither are of much use for serious fans.
