Classic pre-Astor Piazzolla tango and pop-tango is the focus of this compilation, which boasts vintage recordings by such artists as Hugo del Carril, Carlos Gardel, Libertad Lamarque, Roberto Fugazot, and Augustin Irusta. Many of these recordings go back to Argentina's pre-LP era and first came out in South America on 78s -- thus, the sound quality isn't perfect. But the Spanish Astro label has done a fairly good job of digitally remastering classics like del Carril's "Caminito," Gardel's "Mano a Mano," Fugazot's "La Cieguita," and Aldo Campoamor's "Adios Marinero" -- and the company has filtered out the type of pops, clicks, etc. associated with pre-high fidelity recordings. Unfortunately, Astro's liner notes aren't ideal; no recording dates or even original release dates are provided. But the music itself, which ranges from the competent to the superb, is definitely to be enjoyed.
