Fluegelhornist Pete Minger had one of his rare chances to lead a record date for this Concord session and he used it to play quiet but spirited bebop in a quartet with pianist John Campbell, bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Ben Riley. While Campbell's solos show the influence of Bud Powell and the bass-drums team is quite supportive, Minger's soft-toned but fluid fluegelhorn is well featured. He is not afraid to push himself and to his credit his occasional mistakes are left on the record. Pete Minger proves to be a master of the bop vocabulary and is in generally excellent form on nine melodic standards along with his title cut. Bop lovers will not be disapointed by this fine CD.
