Skutch, an Australian band based in Sydney, formed in 1991, so with their first CD not getting released until 1998, its title Long Time Coming fits. They experiment on this album, trying out some grunge with "Bandit," some mellow rock for "One," and rhythm & blues on the title song. Listeners could wish that "Long Time Coming" had been recorded a bit louder, actually, but this is a minor caveat -- it's a pleasant sound and offers enjoyable easy listening. It's a promising start, and listeners may actually wind up preferring this collection to some of their subsequent releases. Sun Sex Sand & Charlie Chan is one to skip, however, Long Time Coming has enough substance and variety to merit some repeat play, and this album shows that Skutch has the potential to be more than just another bar band, if they'll polish their strengths and keep working on their performances.
