This was trumpeter Donald Byrd's second session as a leader, following his lesser-known debut for Transition by a little over a month. Just 22 years old at the time, Byrd did not have his own style yet but already was a promising soloist. Heard in a quintet with tenor saxophonist Frank Foster, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Kenny Clarke, Byrd jams on three group originals and a trio of standards. Nothing all that unusual occurs, but there are some strong moments on this enjoyable blowing.
