John Williams' grandiose opening music for 1978's big-screen Superman: The Movie remains the theme most closely associated with the Man of Steel, but Jay Gruska's work on ABC's mid-'90s series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman remains a worthy addition to the superhero's canon. Gruska emphasizes the romantic comedy elements of the show, eschewing biff-bang-pow fanfare in favor of smaller-scale yet energetic themes, better suited to television's narrow canvas. Dominated by woodwinds, piano, and strings, the music is smart but sexy and while it stretches across a significant swath of stylistic ground, it still manages to capture the essential virtue and heroism of the Superman myth.
