You'd be pretty hard-pressed to find a rock drummer who is as technically gifted on the kit as Terry Bozzio. Throw any complicated, off-meter song structure his way, and there's no way he'll drop the beat (perhaps spending his formative years under the tutelage of the late great Frank Zappa had something to do with it). Throughout his career, Bozzio has never shied away from trying new approaches with the drum kit, and on the 2008 DVD Live with the Tosca Strings, Bozzio's mega-piece drum kit is the front and center instrument amid swirling strings and piano. While some may expect an evening of Bozzio/stringed music to be experimental and cacophonic, this proves to not be the case, as the songs are smartly composed and often quite melodic. Case in point: a pair of tracks that utilize eerie, Middle Eastern-esque sounds -- "New Arabia" and the set-opening "9/18/02" -- as well as the jazzy "9/25/04" and the delicate "La Canja." And there are also a few bonus bits thrown in for good measure, including an interview with Bozzio in which he talks in-depth about his massive kit. Live with the Tosca Strings proves that there isn't a musical style that Terry Bozzio cannot handle masterfully.
