Live with the Mel-Tones, Vol. 2 Review

by John Bush

The second and final volume in Mr. Music's series on one of the best vocal groups of the '40s, Live With the Mel-Tones, Vol. 2 unfortunately includes only six performances by the group, but they are fine. "What Is This Thing Called Love?," a group specialty, proceeds with a radically different arrangement (probably by Tormé himself), while "How High the Moon" has all the pop and zing listeners expect. As on the first volume, Tormé uses his solo performances to duet with the hideously untalented Janet Waldo, but also wraps his velvety voice around a pair of melancholy standards ("I Get Along Without You Very Well," "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams (And Dream Your Troubles Away)").
