The Anachronic Jazz Band is certainly a unique outfit. They take bop standards (including some of te complicated ones) and play them as if they were written in 1927. This German Lp has plenty of eccentric perforances including a dramatic version of Thelonious Monk's "Ask Me Now" (with a hot stop-time trumpet solo), Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring" (which finds the band sounding like the Jean Goldkette Orchestra) and Chano Pozo's "Tin Tin Deo." The nine-piece group is joined by singer Beryl Bryden on three much more conventional numbers but it is for the bebop into dixie performances that this Lp is most memorable. Well worth searching for.
