Closely resembling the personnel, sound and form of the second volume, Volume 4 yields some excellent as well as some fairly listless live performances. The quality of the sound recording is generally good, though at times it is less than desirable as exemplified in "Medley," the only rock track. This is unfortunate as it includes some of the most exciting material on the CD. Highlights include "Mercy Mercy Mercy" and a speedy rendition of "Teen Town" featuring excursions into "Third Stone from the Sun" and "Peter Gunn." "Freedom Jazz Dance" contains the peak performance on the disc, Pastorius riffing inexhaustibly with beautiful fluidity.
