Live in London Review

by Alex Henderson

Yes' international tour for 1977's Going for the One resulted in quite a few bootlegs. One of them was Live in London, a two-LP set recorded at the Empire Pool in London, England on October 28, 1977. Except for "Awaken," everything from Going for the One is performed -- and that includes "Turn of the Century," "Parallels," "Wondrous Stories" and Going for the One's title song. While all of these songs are likable, none of them are among Yes' all-time classics -- thus, the band's emphasis on material from Going for the One makes Live in London and other Yes bootlegs of 1977 less than essential. The progressive rockers make the transition from the decent to the excellent when they embrace "Close to the Edge," "And You and I" and "I've Seen All Good People," three of their best songs -- and it's possible that "Roundabout," which Yes performed regularly on its 1977 tour, was also embraced at this London concert (although it isn't heard on this bootleg). The sound quality on Live in London is so-so -- not bad, but not terrific either. All things considered, this is a bootleg that will only appeal to collectors and completists.
