Live in Hollywood Review

by Scott Yanow

Alphonse Mouzon has recorded a wide variety of music for his own Tenacious label. This relatively straight-ahead set teams the drummer with a few of his Los Angeles jazz friends: trumpeter Sal Marquez, tenor saxophonist Chuck Manning, pianist David Goldblatt, and bassist Dave Enos. The quintet performs ten of Mouzon's originals, which include the lengthy "The Baker's Daughter," "A Waltz for Emma," "All That Jazz," and "If Tomorrow Comes." The well-rounded set (recorded at the short-lived Hollywood Baked Potato) is modern mainstream jazz with a dash of funk, not overly memorable but enjoyable.
