Cornetist Hackett is best known for his association with traditional jazz bands but during 1956-57 he led a surprisingly modern outfit that played everything from Dixie standards to Benny Golson arrangements and Bob Wilber originals. The personnel at various times included Wilber (on clarinet and soprano), baritonist Ernie Caceres doubling on clarinet, Tom Gwaltney on clarinet and vibes and Dick Cary on piano and alto horn. Although the group did not catch on commercially, its music still sounds quite fresh and unusual today. This LP from the collector's label Shoestring, the first of two, is well worth acquiring.
