In addition to new versions of Lionel Hampton's three "greatest hits" ("Flying Home," "Hamp's Boogie-Woogie" and "Airmail Special"), this live nonet session features the veteran swing vibraphonist grappling succesfully with two of John Coltrane's most notable compositions ("Giant Steps" and "Moments Notice") along with songs by Roland Hanna and Joe Henderson. Clearly Hampton, although always closely identified with the swing era, was one of the few members of his musical generation to keep up with later developments in jazz. With strong solos by trumpeter Joe Newman, Paul Moen on tenor, Eddie Chamblee (alternating between alto and tenor) and Wild Bill Davis on organ and piano, this spirited and diverse set is highly recommended.
