Like all music associated with carnival, Olodum's brand of music practically bursts with excitement. The live emotion of Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival ups the intensity and the singers, backup chorus, horns, and explosive drumming capture the fervor of the legendary celebration. This is an exhaustive CD, with 15 tracks, and not all of them manage to be effective. "Samba Rap" doesn't quite work and "Nossa Gente" gives a marching band effect. The band is at its best with velvet-voiced Marquinhos Marques, who makes "Girassol" sparkle, and the commanding vocals of Tania Santana, who lights up the crowd with "Requebra."
