Frank Catalano has not yet become a famous name but he is an exciting high-powered tenor saxophonist. Catalano, who was only 19 at the time he recorded this passionate live set, holds his own in a quintet with trumpeter Randy Brecker, pianist Larry Novak, bassist Eric Hochberg, and drummer Paul Wertico. Catalano and his group stretch out on five songs which range in length from 10:41 to 15:58. Four are famous standards while "Bubble House" is by Medeski, Martin & Wood. Catalano never seems to run out of ideas during his lengthy improvisations and he joyfully trades off with Brecker on several occasions. It takes a lot of courage to stretch out on such familiar songs as "Impressions," "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise," and "The Theme," but perhaps not for one with Catalano's obvious musical talents. He clearly has a great future ahead of him.
