Following several discs for European labels, pianist Roberta Piket's debut for an American label showcases a confident musician with plenty of chops. Starting off with a sizzling post-bop opener, "I'm My Everything" (based on the well known "You're My Everything"), it's easy to guess that the Blue Note audiences that heard these performances were likely entranced. She glides through a waltzing take of "While We're Young" and savors the poignant ballad "Everywhere I Look." Piket also shows promise as a composer, with her intense "Just A Blues" which features guest John O'Gallagher on soprano sax, and tricky "Five-Four Play," with O'Gallagher switching to alto sax. Her strong rhythm section includes veteran bassist Harvie Swartz and drummer Jeff Williams. Expect to hear a lot more from Roberta Piket in the near future.
