For the first half of this frequently amazing disc, Magic Sam plays for his West side homefolks at the Alex Club. The time is 1963-64, he's backed by saxists A.C. Reed and Eddie Shaw and his longtime bassist, Mac Thompson, and he's blasting the hits of the day with a joyous abandon. A little over six years later, Sam wowed the Ann Arbor Blues Festival with a sensational trio set just as inordinately powerful in its own way. Sound quality is rough on both artifacts, but no matter.
