It is a real pity that pianist/bandleader Abdullah Ibrahim's recordings for Black-Hawk have been out of print since the collapse of that label. This live LP (which also was originally released on Ibrahim's Ekapa label) has a set of duets by the pianist and altoist Carlos Ward (who doubles on flute), one of Abdullah's long-term members. The music is episodic, occasionally dramatic and sometimes reverent. Highlights include "The Dream," "For Coltrane" and "Soweto." Incidentally, there was never any Vol. 2.
