Bill Evans was recorded for radio broadcast numerous times during his career, particularly during the last decade of his life, though this is one of just a few such releases to emerge that was taped in the U.S. Recorded for broadcast by WGBH-FM, the pianist is heard with his final trio, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe LaBarbera. The crowd is unusually noisy during the opening track, "Re: Person I Knew," because at this point in his career, the audience was frequently packed with reverent fans who savored hearing every note rather than their own conversations. But by the time this introspective number is completed, they have settled down. Among the highlights is the thoughtful interpretation of "The Peacocks" and the lighthearted take of "Getting Sentimental Over You" (the latter a piece Evans rarely played) with a superb solo feature for Johnson, a driving take of Johnny Mandel's "Theme from M*A*S*H," along with the rousing finale of "My Romance," which showcases LaBarbera.
