The Django Festival was founded in 2000, so this Live at Birdland 2012 set winds up being a celebration of an institution -- a party honoring the enduring strength of the event, as well as Django Reinhardt's legacy. Here, the Schmitt family behind this celebration -- father guitarist/violinist Dorado and his guitarist son Samson -- play with two other family members, accordionist Ludovic Beier, violinist Pierre Blanchard, bassist Xavier Nikq, cellist Jisoo Ok, two other guitarists, and a saxophonist, almost all of whom are sharing the stage for the first time in the U.S. The difference between the Schmitts' approach and some other Django disciples is that this group writes original music within the style of Reinhardt, so this feels like part of a tradition while subtly expanding it. But, the fun in Live at Birdland 2012 isn't quite so intellectual -- it's great to hear these players interact, enjoying their interplay and lively rhythms. It's sophisticated good-time music.
