Live! Review

by Scott Yanow

Abe Most has long been one of the top swing clarinetists around but he has made relatively few recordings as a leader through the years. Fortunately the Camard label captured Most during two concerts for this CD. Joined by pianist Ray Sherman, bassist Eugene Wright, drummer Jack Sperling and (on one of the two dates) vibraphonist Peter Appleyard, Abe Most plays five songs associated with Benny Goodman including heated renditions of "Undecided" and "Air Mail Special." Since Appleyard has long had the ability to sound just like Lionel Hampton whenever he wants, this is very much a BG Quartet tribute. The other outing allows Most a chance to show off his roots in Artie Shaw although his own individuality peeks through. With Ray Sherman (an underrated great) also contributing some strong solos, this small-label release is well worth picking up. These veterans should not be taken for granted.
