Lionel Review

by Scott Yanow

A decent small-group LP from 1957, this set does not list personnel or recording dates and has lengthy but somewhat irrelevant liner notes. However, the music (featuring the great vibraphonist with a sextet including Bobby Plater on reeds, pianist Oscar Dennard and guitarist Billy Mackel) contains swinging renditions of a variety of standards and ballads. Since it is doubtful that this material will be reissued on CD anytime soon, it is worth picking up in its original LP format.
