It's no surprise that Midnight Movies are from California. Their sound has the hazy, sun-soaked feel of a walk on the beach under heavy sedation, with guitars that drift like distant clouds, and singer Gena Olivier's vocals floating like a summer breeze. The band is indebted to classic West Coast psychedelia on the order of the Jefferson Airplane, but it also bears the arty influence of My Bloody Valentine and the Velvet Underground. All of these elements and more can be heard on the group's sophomore effort LION THE GIRL. Dreamy and introspective, yet electric and slightly brooding, LION THE GIRL is a mesmerizing aural carpet ride.
