Lifted: Live in Buenos Aires Review

by Stewart Mason

A DJ set from producer/remixer Matt Mau, Lifted: Live in Buenos Aires is straight-up, old-school house in the classic Frankie Knuckles style. An easy, mid-tempo groove prevails for the entire 80 minutes with only minimal variation, but Mau is a skilled enough DJ to vary the mix, slotting the '70s-style pure disco of Lisa Millett's "Closer" next to the percolating acid house groove of Andy Caldwell's "I Can't Wait" and paying close attention to the intricacies of pacing. However, the set contains no particularly prized rarities or remixes of the sort that trainspotting collectors salivate over, making Lifted: Live in Buenos Aires a perfectly nice but somewhat utilitarian dance set. As everyone from Yogi Berra to Sam Goldwyn is alleged to have said, "If you like this sort of thing, then this is the sort of thing you'll like."
