The Tacoma, WA-based Monarchs are led by the jovial and spirited trumpeter Lance Buller. Their music is mostly swing-oriented with hints of 1950s R&B and Dixieland. Best-known among the sidemen are pianist Jack Perciful (who used to be with Harry James) and guest altoist Bill Ramsay (formerly with Count Basie). Buller and Stephanie Porter provide the vocals and the repertoire ranges from "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Two Sleepy People" to "A Night in Tunisia" and "Mack the Knife." This CD offers fun, if not essential, music by a fine local band.
