If you're nostalgic for Soviet May Day Parades, with their tanks and missiles and marching Red Army soldiers, this disc featuring the Chorus of the Red Army is the disc for you. Under the direction of longtime (1946 through 1986) leader Boris Alexandrov, the 200 men of the Chorus give their all to 14 of the best-known songs from the repertoire of the Red Army, starting with the Russian National Anthem and ending with "Oh, You Night." Some folks could complain that the Chorus never sings quieter than a bellow. Others might object that the full orchestral accompaniment only reinforces the sensation that one is being bludgeoned with a very large stick. And still others might complain that the sound quality -- the disc does not list a recording date or even if the recording was made in monaural, stereo, or digital -- is exceedingly primitive by Western standards. But for those who miss monumental displays of sheer military strength, this disc will be just the thing.
