Bassist John Leitham's third CD for the USA label features several different overlapping groups. Leitham is heard in a trio with guitarist Barry Zweig and trombonist Bill Watrous; with a quintet that adds pianist Tom Ranier and drummer Jeff Hamilton; in a different trio with Ranier and Hamilton; and with a particularly exciting unit that also features Ranier, drummer Roy McCurdy and both Pete Christlieb and Rickey Woodard on tenors. The music is essentially bop to hard bop, with the highlights including "Long Ago and Far Away," "Oleo," Oscar Pettiford's "Laverne Walk" and "Jordu"; all 11 straight-ahead selections are quite enjoyable and played well by these expert Los Angeles-based jazzmen.
