AllMusic Review by

32 Jazz's Left Hook, Right Cross is a double-disc set that features Rahsaan Roland's 1969 album Volunteered Slavery on the first disc and 1972's Blacknuss on the second. Although three years separate the two records, they share a similar sensibility in how they offer unpredictable, totally original interpretations of pop and soul songs next to adventurous originals and readings of contemporary jazz pieces. Overall, Volunteered Slavery is a stronger piece, but both are quality albums, making Left Hook, Right Cross an excellent bargain.
