AllMusic Review by

Based in Paris from 1954 to 1973, Le Domaine musical was a groundbreaking concert series, established to promote the new music of the postwar generation, and it included important works by such avant-garde composers as Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Olivier Messiaen, Luciano Berio, Mauricio Kagel, Luigi Nono, Hans Werner Henze, and Henri Pousseur, as well as modernist classics by Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Anton Webern, and Edgard Varèse. This limited-edition box set brings together landmark recordings of these composers' works, made between 1958 and 1967 during Boulez's tenure as director of the group. The ten CDs are organized thematically, offering whole programs devoted to music by Boulez, Stravinsky, and the Second Viennese School, as well as French antecedents and the leading figures of the so-called "International School" of serial composition. This is a heady mix of modernist techniques and expressions, and the music has lost little of its power to shock and challenge, so this set is recommended for adventurous listeners and students of the music of the mid-20th century.
