Other than a Southland album (partly reissued by Coral) and a couple of live dates that he happened to be on, this was the first LP led by clarinetist Pete Fountain. It was released shortly after Lawrence Welk decided to build a Dixieland band around Fountain and feature him on specialties during his television series. The Welk Orchestra backs the clarinetist on this set, but the music is fairly jazz-oriented, and Fountain's enthusiasm comes through. Highlights include "When My Baby Smiles At Me," "Tiger Rag" and "Hindustan." Although Pete Fountain would make more significant records for Coral in the near future, this was a good start.
