Largo Review

by Jason Birchmeier

Featuring six tracks of sparse dub techno, Largo has few weak moments; each of the six similar tracks explores a different tone. Sometimes, as during "Largo," the tempo becomes subtly rushed, moving forward in a galloping fashion. The effect seems subtle due to the music's dichotomous sounds: the rumbling dub basslines swell and cycle with deep tones that are nearly inaudible and more felt than heard, while the occasional percussive taps and timid high-hats sprinkle across the bass sounds so lightly that they are barely noticed. There are other surreal sounds that work their way into these tracks which, clocking in somewhere around ten minutes each, seem to drift forever. Still, in the end, the listener is left mainly with sensation. The sounds of Fluxion's palette seem unfamiliar and otherworldly, and this six-track EP showcases them wonderfully.
