Louis Morais, the great Cape Verdean saxophonist and clarinetist, is a prodigy of the legendary maestro Jose Alves Dos Reis. His musical message is a call to his people to retain and develop their unique culture through liberation. If you want to experience the soul of Cape Verde, Lagrimas is an excellent place to start. His saxophone kicks off the album with "Problema," a romping coladeira with Manu Lima on keyboards and enough bass to fill up any listening room. "Anjo Divino," another energized coladeira, continues to dig the groove deeper. Bass and percussion are in ample supply here too. The driving coladeiras are offset by a couple of mornas on which Morais wails his saxophone like he's blowing to the open sea. He's another national treasure of Cape Verde, and this album shows why. This is dance music with loads of swing from one of the original masters. Highly recommended.
