Ladies of Country Review

by Thom Jurek

When looking at a super-budget three-disc set like this and considering the star power of the artists featured, it’s really important to look at the fine print -- if there is any. This set features a disc each by Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Tanya Tucker. When you look at the licensing information, you will find that it is Universal Music who ultimately owns the rights to these tunes, and therefore carefully selected material according to their terrain. In Cline's case, that’s not a problem. She spent her career recording for a Universal-owned affiliate label, and her disc contains all the hits. the same goes for Lynn. On Tucker's disc, however, you will find that most of the tunes here not her signature hits (she had recorded her biggest hits for another label). How do you have a Tanya Tucker disc without “Delta Dawn” or “Would You Lay with Me in a Field Of Stone?” In other words, the material on the latter CD in this collection is a slapdash collection of MCA-Universal tracks, assembled without any regard for the artist's reputation, but instead more concerned with money grab by the music biz.
