La Manivelle Magyare has its nutty moments. The Hungarian sextet features a two saxophone-guitar-piano-violin-percussion instrumentation. Denis Charolles and Frederic Gastard play lengthy written arrangements which are episodic and full of surprises and lots of wit, particularly "Winnie the Pooh Joins Europe, Part 1." Listeners have no idea what is coming up next with each original piece developing in unexpected ways. While there are individual moments for soloists, it is the lengthy ensembles and group interplay, along with those often-crazy arrangements, that give this eccentric set its personality.
