From just before to just after World War II, Fréhel was one of the great voices of French café-concert and cabaret. Despite all the recordings and the fame (and scandal), she was, stylistically, in the classic working class Parisian tradition, a tradition that was as much a true urban popular form as British music hall. Two 1908 cuts aside, this CD covers 1928-1930.
