AllMusic Review by

The eclectic Baltimore-based Krill is a quartet comprised of two multi-talented saxophonists (John Dierker and Evan Rapport) plus string bass (F. Vattel Cherry) and drums (Will Redman). Much more jazz oriented than some other projects by these musicians, this recording is a stunning blend of blues-drenched wails, free improvisation, clever melodic invention, and ever-changing interaction. Rapport and Dierker together play more than ten instruments, including soprano, alto, and tenor saxes, flute, recorders, and clarinets. Considering that Rapport can blow more than one horn at a time, the permutations are endless. There are hints of Mat Gustafsson/Ken Vandermark and even Steve Lacy in the sounds, but Krill stamps its own unique mark with quirky melodies, original solos, and unusual arrangements that highlight color and texture. There is a distinct group feel to the quartet, one that somehow manages to merge the best of jazz with the excitement of unfettered free improvisation. Bravo!
