AllMusic Review by

An enormously important artist to the development of the Delta blues, Tommy Johnson is also one of the more elusive. Recording less than 20 sides between 1928-1929, Johnson's legacy remains immensely lean, yet the power and eloquence of songs such as "Cool Drink of Water Blues" and "I Wonder to Myself" remain undimmed. Unfortunately, this budget release of Johnson's work seems unnecessary, especially next to Document's definitive Complete Recorded Works. Johnson's discography is necessarily lean, and King of the Blues, Vol. 5 may be a good budget option, but most fans would be better-served by Document's release.
