While his reputation as a live revelation remains intact, Chicagoan Bobby Conn has always had a little trouble translating the fervor of his live performances onto wax. Instead of trying yet again, 2007's KING FOR A DAY--his fourth recording for Thrill Jockey--opts for a subtler approach. The results dull Conn's throbbing soul a bit, but his gift for a hooky melody remains intact and the confectionary production sheen makes ear candy of both the title track and "Love Let Me Down." Who knew that underneath the live glam monster lurked a studio-friendly master craftsman?
