Something of a rarity in the modern anime soundtrack, the official soundtrack for Katekyo Hitman Reborn! is almost entirely score material. No rapping pop stars, no pop-friendly rap stars, no off-key harmonizing. Instead, it's all in the realm of soul-jazz. This is the territory of Quincy Jones' "Soul Bossa Nova," of Herbie Hancock's "Blow-Up." Horns are plentiful and vibraphones are everywhere in orchestral jazz that bleeds into car chases, spy themes, and the like. It's strange in the age of the Japanese pop/rock band to focus so intensely on orchestral jazz and classical guitar, but it's an entirely refreshing take on the anime soundtrack.
