Both Kabuki theatre, in which song is central, and the chamber music called Jiuta-Mai, were patronized by the new cultured middle class of the 17th to 19th century, and the samisen lute was an instrument of the secular bourgeoisie. The Kabuki pieces here, for two voices and two samisen and Jiuta-Mai for voices, shangen lute and koto, were recorded during a Swiss concert tour.
