K-Tel Presents: Dance to the Music Review

by Andy Kellman

Twenty-five of the 26 tracks on K-Tel Presents: Dance to the Music are re-recordings, indicated by this disclaimer on the back of the packaging: "All selections are new stereo recordings by the original artists or one or more members of the original group." Unsurprisingly, absolutely none of the re-recordings are preferable to the originals. Most of them are flat-out bad, made with cheap equipment and only a fraction of the necessary passion (and sometimes skill). Making matters worse, several inclusions appear on other K-Tel releases. Inferior versions of Yarbrough & Peoples' "Don't Stop the Music," Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," Freda Payne's "Band of Gold," and Tavares' "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" are included. At least K-Tel spells "Yarbrough" correctly this time around.
