AllMusic Review by

Johnny Long led a swing-era big band best known for its hit version of "A Shanty in Old Shanty Town." That song features a catchy glee-club vocal by bandmembers. This collector's LP has 14 selections taken from radio broadcasts, including a few additional similar group vocals ("It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" and "Sweet Sue" among them) along with two vocals from Mary Lou Wilson and one by Francie Laine. Otherwise, the personnel is largely unknown, but the music is more jazz-oriented than Long's studio sessions. Highlights including swinging versions of "Liza," "How About You" (a feature for Dick Perry's trumpet), "The Lady Is a Tramp," and "Strictly Instrumental." Swing collectors will enjoy this rare album.
