Just for the Fun of It Review

by Scott Yanow

Angela DeNiro is a shouting, brassy singer who is able to swing, if not show much subtlety. Joined by a big band led by her husband, arranger Ron Aprea, DeNiro sounds quite spirited on such material as "I'm Old Fashioned," "All Blues," "Orange Colored Sky" and "It's a Wonderful World." There are two instrumentals for the big band (including Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower"); "Lies of Handsome Men" is taken as a vocal-piano duet; and there are many brief solos from the fine if conventional East Coast-based band.
