AllMusic Review by

Assembling some of the most accomplished, if not the best-known, singers in the genre, this collection of emotive slow blues gathers artists like Little Johnny Taylor (not to be confused with the Johnnie Taylor of "Who's Making Love" fame), whose "How Can a Broken Man Survive" is a highlight; Ricky Allen, whose "Messed Around and Fell in Love" is a distant relation to the similarly titled mid-1970s Elvin Bishop hit; and the Objectives, whose "Oh My Love (Come back to Me)" is a potent blend of soul and doo-wop. There's also some early Fontella Bass, heard here on "I Want Everyone to Know" in a more relaxed mood than on her later hit, "Rescue Me." Southern soul, deep soul, or juke joint soul, this set is a fine, concise introduction to a richly rewarding genre.
