As with altoist Sonny Simmons' previous CIMP release, this CD is unusual, but for different reasons. Simmons is once again joined by Michael Marcus (who this time doubles on manzello and C-melody sax) and drummer Charles Moffett, but also by bassist Steve Neil, whose presence makes the music seem slightly more conventional. However, Simmons decided to play the entire set on tenor, and he is surprisingly effective, still holding onto his quite individual musical personality. Marcus is showcased in a duet with Neil ("Monk Mania"), while "The Call for Old Sirius" was performed by the trio without Marcus. The six selections (four of which are quite lengthy) contain rather adventurous playing, but the communication between the musicians (including drummer Moffett, who is heard on one of his final recordings) is impressive. Recommended to open-eared listeners.
