Saint Etienne's 1992 single "Join Our Club"/"People Get Real" was another in an amazing string of singles the group released between 1990 and 1994. The original mix of "Join Our Club" is a soaring, joyous disco track that is musically and lyrically wide open. It later turned up on the American release of So Tough. The "Chemically Friendly Zoom Mix" tethers the exuberance to a rock-hard beat and throws in some sped-up heavy metal guitar riffs, salacious talk-overs from Sarah Cracknell, and some chopped-up diva vocals. It is a great club mix that was later a highlight of the Casino Classics disc. "People Get Real" mashes up a funky drum sample with sad synth strings and one of Cracknell's most melancholy vocals and ends up with one of the group's strongest songs. The band had meant for the song to be a single by itself but the label didn't think it was commercial enough. Say what? It turned up on the American release of Foxbase Alpha later in 1992. The last song, "Scene 93," is a shoegaze-y chunk of concrète music that is quite pleasant for the first couple minutes but after that becomes annoying filler. Hardcore Etienne collectors will probably want to hunt this down, but otherwise the songs, apart from "Scene 93," turn up in far more accessible places.
