This LP gives listeners an excellent sampling from the many recordings made over a four-decade period featuring the versatile swing pianist Johnny Guarnieri. Most of the selections are taken from his most prolific period, the 1940s. Guarnieri is heard as a sideman with groups led by Ziggy Elman, Benny Goodman (his sextet's rendition of "I'm Confessin'"), Artie Shaw, Jerry Jerome, Will Bradley, Ben Webster, Benny Morton, Coleman Hawkins, Barney Bigard, Don Byas, and J.C. Heard, and in a variety of jam sessions (including a hot V-Disc version of "Rosetta"), as well as with his own small groups. The latest selection is one on which he backs singer Elma Santa on "Alabamy Bound" in 1978. Excellent small-group swing music with enough rarities for this to be worth picking up by collectors.
