From his first recordings to his last, the short musical life of Jimmy Blythe is fully covered on this imported CD from the Austrian RST label. All of his sessions as a leader (with the exception of his duets with Buddy Burton) are on this very definitive CD. The music ranges from piano solos (early examples of boogie-woogie and stride) to blues records with singers Viola Bartlette and Alexander Robinson; combo performances with Blythe's Sinful Five, the Midnight Rounders, and Jimmy Bertrand's Washboard Wizards; and piano duets with Charlie Clark. There is plenty of variety on this excellent program of early jazz and blues, highly recommended to 1920s collectors.
