AllMusic Review by

Gerald Wilson's fourth and final recording for Albert Marx's Discovery and Trend labels features him revisiting a couple of his 1960s charts ("Carlos" and "Blues for Yna Yna") and paying tribute on four songs to his period with Jimmy Lunceford ("Yarddog Mazurka," "48 Years Later," "Lunceford Special," and "Margie"). In addition, Wilson's big band plays a head arrangement of "Flying Home" and he debuts such pieces as "Jenna," "Back to the Roots" and "B-Bop and the Song." The soloists include trumpeters Oscar Brashear, Ron Barrows, and Snooky Young, Carl Randall on tenor, altoists Danny House and Randall Willis, trombonist Thurman Green, and Anthony Wilson (Gerald's son) on guitar, among others. This CD is an excellent all-round showcase for both Gerald Wilson's arrangements and his superior big band.
